Sodium sulfide is the chemical compound with the formula Na2S, or more commonly its hydrate Na2S·9H2O. Both are colorless water-soluble salts that give strongly alkaline solutions. When exposed to moist air, Na2S and its hydrates emit hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs.

Application:

used as making sulphur dyestuff intermediate reducer, mordant, flotation agent, depilatory for leather, digestion auxiliary in paper-making also widely used in pigment and rubber industry, etc.

 

Caution 
Inhalation: Inhalation of the dust can cause sore throat, coughing and shortness of breath. Very high or very long exposures could lead to a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and, possibly, death. 
Skin Contact: Can cause severe skin irritation and burns.  
Eye Contact: Can cause redness, pain, blurred vision and burns which are slow   healing. Blindness may result.
